Last week, many of you received an email celebrating the Mental Health Justice Team and our significant victory of raising the monthly personal need allowance in IL through a budget measure (more at this link). Today, we call on Governor Rauner to sign SB1353 and make this victory permanent!
For the last year, the Mental Health Justice Team has been fighting to increase the monthly personal needs allowance given to people living in certain classifications of nursing homes. For 30 years, individuals living in nursing facilities have been forced to live off of $30/month or $1/day. This is not only impossible to live on, it forces people to live in a life with no freedom or dignity. SB1353 would raise the monthly PNA to $60/month permanently rather than leaving it to the whims of budget decisions.
This afternoon, we will be mailing almost 600 letters of support for SB1353 to Governor Rauner. We want to make it loud and clear to Gov. Rauner that Illinois residents support dignity and independence for people living with mental illness!
Join us TODAY as we work to get 100 people to call into Gov. Rauner’s office to urge him to sign SB1353 into law.
Call Gov. Rauner at either his Springfield office 217-782-0244 or his Chicago office 312-814-2121.
- Here is a script to work from: “Hello, my name is _____________and I am a resident of Illinois. I am calling to urge Governor Rauner to sign SB1353 to raise the monthly personal need allowance and support dignity for people living with mental illness in Illinois!”
