Education Team
The Education Team is made up of parents, students, teachers, and resident allies ready to take action via community-based approaches to address challenges of educational equity in Chicago’s Northside public schools. Leaders are intentional about developing a relational culture in which we seek to strengthen ties between our communities and our schools based on shared values and re-defining teacher preparation that takes into account the range of issues that students and families face every day.
Grow Your Own Teachers (GYO)
ONE Northside is a member of Grow Your Own Teacher program (GYO). The Grow Your Own Teacher program is an innovative partnership of community organizations, higher education institutions, and school districts that support parents, community members, and paraprofessionals in low-income communities to become highly qualified teachers.
GYO has set the following goals: create a pipeline of highly qualified teachers of color; improve teacher retention in low-income schools; recruit for hard-to-staff schools and hard-to-fill positions; and increase cultural competence and community connections of teachers.
Currently, ONE Nothside is partnering with Truman College and Northeastern Illinois University to provide the education for the teacher candidates. In addition to Chicago, GYO has sites across Illinois in Rockford, Bloomington, Springfield, Carbondale, East St Louis, and the Quad Cities.
