The following summary was written by Jim Simonis, a ONE Northside member and leader.
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, ONE Northside continued its long standing tradition hosting a Fall Fundraiser. Each year the Fall Fundraiser is the major annual fundraising event through which ONE Northside is able to continue its important work so that everyone in our city, county and state has the opportunity to thrive. This year, the event was held at the Second Unitarian Church and attended by close to 100 people. The Fundraiser provides a relaxed social setting for leaders from member institutions, ONE Northside board members and general social justice supporters to meet and greet one another while sharing food, drinks and stories.
The highlight of the Fundraiser as in previous years was the guest speaker. Past speakers have included professor and former Alderman Dick Simpson, Chicago Reader journalist Ben Joravsky and National Domestic Worker’s Alliance Director Ai-jen Poo to name a few. This year, the guest speaker was Juanita Irizarry, a mover and shaker on the Chicago movement scene and the Director of Friends of the Parks. She has taken on Mayor Emmanuel, the democratic machine politics of Chicago, and even George Lucas! Irizarry shared captivating stories from her start in the Humboldt Park neighborhood to her most recent fight about land rights of the Chicago lakefront property.
Besides being a great opportunity to support ONE Northside financially, the fundraiser is a tremendously energizing event. All who attended left out of the event joyfully inspired to continue our many faceted, ongoing struggles for social justice.
As an extra bonus a large screen TV was set up outside the kitchen so that Cub fans were able to witness the victory in the second game of the World Series!
