Thank you for your continued support in the fight for healthcare for all! As many of you know, the vote to repeal the ACA was once again delayed just before the July 4 recess. This is because of the large scale push back that has been organized throughout the country–the resounding mantra being “healthcare is a human right”! Join us in keeping up the fight (more details below)!
Early this week, our federal level Senators came back into session. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell seems more resolved than ever to pass this terrible bill that would destroy healthcare for so many people. He has even declared that the legislators’ August recess will be cut two weeks short in order to keep them in session to get this passed. We’ve heard that Sen. McConnell is hoping to pass this horrible legislation next week with some revisions and deal cutting to get legislators on board (like $45mil for opiod addiction treatment and the “Cruz amendment “that would allow insurance companies to offer plans that are not ACA compliant if they offered others that are). There will be a new CBO (congressional budget office) score coming out early next week that will likely look minimally better than the last score that the bill received. The reasons why it will look slightly better is because there is a slight change on the Medicaid cap levels and they extending out the timeline for phasing out Medicaid expansion and the CBO score only goes out 10 years. The fear is that they’ll use this “improved” score to push it over the edge when in reality this is the same old terrible bill! If/when the bill passes the Senate, it will go to the House immediately and could be passed there within hours.
This means we need to keep acting to voice our opposition and demand that our elected officials support healthcare for all! Join with faith and community leaders as we raise our voices loudly against the American Health Care Act (AHCA) and demand that leaders like Bruce Rauner to turn their hearts of stone and stand up for those in need of care. On Tuesday, July 18 at noon at the Chicago Temple (77 W Washington), we will join together for a downtown prayer service and procession to the Thompson Center. This inter-faith gathering will preside over a blessing of the sick and call for the “Illinois Healthcare Covenant,” to renew the responsibility of our leaders to protect the most vulnerable in the name of their faith traditions and ensure that healthcare in Illinois is sheltered from attacks both in Springfield and Washington.
Time: Tuesday, July 18 at noon (12pm); meet at ONE Northside (4648 N Racine) at 11:15am to ride CTA down together
Location: Chicago Temple (77 W. Washington)
