Over the course of 16 days and 200 miles, millions of people heard our vision for Illinois: a state where every person and every community has the resources to thrive.
And so did Bruce Rauner, Michael Madigan and John Cullerton, the political leadership of this state who consistently put the interests of corporations and the rich before the people of Illinois. (Click here to view some of the media coverage.)
Although we haven’t yet won the budget we need, our March to Springfield for a People and Planet First Budget changed the public narrative — and the press coverage — about the budget from a personal battle between Gov. Rauner and Speaker Madigan to the human cost of the budget impasse. Shaping the public narrative about an issue is an essential step on the path to victory.
A few statistics from the march:
- We averaged 11-13 miles per day. We slept on church and synagogue floors and ate meals prepared by people in various congregations.
- We had 5 listening sessions in Chicago, Joliet, Dwight, Bloomington-Normal, and Springfield where we heard local people’s stories, heard their visions for their communities and the state of IL, and shared our analysis that all of our dreams are possible if we tax the rich and big corporations.
- We also generated over 60 media hits about our budget proposal, reaching millions of people throughout Illinois in small towns and big cities alike.
Millions of people heard our plan for Illinois: putting hundreds of thousands of people to work doing the things our communities need. By closing corporate tax loopholes and requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share, we can have universal healthcare, fully funded public education, free tuition at state universities, fully funded human services, modern infrastructure and green energy.
But we have so much more work to do. Hundreds of people gave significant time and money to make this march a success. Please give today to provide the resources for us to continue the fight for a People and Planet First Budget for Illinois. We’ve never been more proud to be part of this collective of amazing people, and we believe that if we continue to fight, we will win.
