ONE Northside participated in the citywide Take Back Chicago event on Veteran’s Day, November 11th. Citizens from Chicago came together to rally and march through downtown in this event hosted by the Grassroots Collaborative. The theme was around how the Mayor continues to run our city by listening to corporate elites and the 1% who have been pushing an agenda that hurts our families and our neighborhoods, but he cannot seem to bend an ear to the people living in the city. We convened together to take back our city!
There were three key citywide issues that the rally focused on:
- Raising the minimum wage to $15/hour.
- Getting an elected school board.
- Holding the Chicago Housing Authority accountable for years of underperformance and deregulation.
In the beginning of the rally, North CHI Alliance leader, Mary Nelson (pictured bottom left), spoke abouther experience with homelessness the past three years and how no one should have to spend three long years looking for housing when the Chicago Housing Authority sits on over $430 million.
After the everyone was riled up from the rally, over 800 people and citizens of Chicago were released to the streets. We marched passed Bank of America, McDonalds, and Loop Capital. At the end of the action, we regrouped in front of the Board of Trade where puppet Mayor Emanuel was connected and being pulled by the strings of puppets Ald. McDonald, Ald. Loop Capital, and Ald. Bank of America. Together, we cut the strings between the Mayor and the fake alderman to return the people back to politics!
