On Feb. 7, 2017, the Mental Health Justice Team at ONE Northside led an action with our partners in Fair Economy Illinois demanding universal healthcare for all!
The Resist Trump Tuesdays Chicago action pushed for Illinois Senator Dick Durbin to publicly commit to VOTE NO on Tom Price, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Price wants to take health care away from 30 million of us. He wants to privatize Medicare, gut Medicaid, and push high-deductible plans. Price is another nomination to round out Trump’s “Corporate Cabinet” nominations with his strong financial ties to pharmaceutical companies. Community leaders demanded that Senators Duckworth and Durbin vote NO on Price and protect the Affordable Care Act through doing a “die in” demonstration outside of their offices at the Federal Building.
We then marched the Thompson Center where Gov. Rauner has his Chicago offices. We demanded that Gov. Rauner continue to push Republicans at the federal level to not repeal or replace the ACA, which would mean a loss of $49.9 Billion between now and 2028 to the State of Illinois.
Finally we ended the action by debuting the new issue that the Mental Health Justice Team is leading on this year–increasing the Personal Needs Allowance in Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Facilities. We called on Governor Rauner to support Illinois legislation to increase the personal needs allowance from $30/month to $100/month in order to put the well-being of nursing facility residents over the profit interests of owners. We declared that healthcare is a human right and dignified care should be accessible to all.
