The IL Green New Deal Coalition launched in December of 2020, with organizations, including local environmental justice groups, labor groups, and climate justice and big green groups. Our coalition is fighting to make real the vision of the Green New Deal, a transformative vision for addressing both the climate crises, and the crises our society face around housing, transportation, jobs, energy, and schools. You can learn more about the Green New Deal here.
To build power in the state of Illinois, our coalition is launching our first campaign, Green New Deal for Social Housing.
Our coalition believes that Illinois residents should have the opportunity to live in publicly-owned, accessible, affordable, green social housing. Social Housing would create mixed-income buildings in desirable locations close to transit, parks, and recreation. And we believe it’s time to build the power to make real a society in which there are community-owned homes for people of all income levels: from bus drivers to business owners, from janitors to journalists, teachers and students, for people with disabilities, young people and seniors. Tenants will spend no more than 30% of their income on rent. We’re going to need your help to get us there.
So again, join us on Saturday December 9 for our Social Housing Campaign launch, by signing up below! During the listening session, we’ll present an overview of green social housing and discuss and hold space for attendees to give feedback on key pieces of the campaign.
Please reach out to Ruth Campos at rc*****@on**********.org if you have any follow-up questions about the listening session.
