What We Do

How ONE Northside Builds Power to Fight Injustice

People-powered issue campaigns - Our community members are the experts on the problems they face, so we work together to push for laws, policy changes, or other concrete actions that we need.

Leadership development - We grow our power by bringing people together who share our values and training them in the skills they need to make change in the public arena.

A democracy that works for us - When our government is led by poor and working class people we will win an economy that puts the needs of people and the planet before profits for greedy corporations. We register new voters, and mobilize and educate our leaders to participate in the democratic process.

Our Priority Issue Areas
Our organizing work is guided by our shared values of racial, social, and economic justice for all. We envision a North Side where everyone is able to thrive and live safely with joy and dignity, regardless of race, immigration status, age, gender, sexuality, ability, ethnicity, housing status, religion, mental health condition, or other identity or status. These beliefs intersect all our organizing work, but our campaigns are organized around these focus areas:
Housing Is A Human Right Sign

Housing Justice

The rent is too damn high! Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live. We organize people living in affordable housing, people who are unhoused, and allies to fight for housing justice.

Building Safe Communities

We’re building toward a city where ALL of our neighbors are safe from violence, including police violence. We organize to win alternatives to policing because we trust that being in community keeps us safe. Our Violence Prevention Program provides a model for community-centered safety solutions.

Environmental Justice

Everyone deserves clean air and water, access to adequate heating and cooling, and a liveable planet to pass on to future generations. Black and Brown communities will feel the effects of climate change first and worst - they must be at the center of solutions.

Democracy & Budgets

Budgets are moral documents-- how our governments raise and spend our public dollars is a reflection of our values. Problems like poverty and homelessness are political choices, and we will fight for a democracy where poor and working-class people of all races lead our government instead of greedy corporations and billionaires.

Violence Prevention - Rogers Park and Uptown

ONE Northside is a partner of the citywide Communities Partnering 4 Peace CVI coalition. Our outreach workers, case managers, and victims' advocates are professionals who build authentic relationships with community members to interrupt the cycle of violence and provide trauma-informed wraparound services.

Parent Mentors

ONE Northside is a proud partner of the Parent Mentor program of the Parent Engagement Institute. We have over 60 Parent Mentors, mostly women of color, working in 8 North Side schools. Parent Mentors assist students for 2 hours every day, helping to fill the gaps in our public school system.

Our Affinity Spaces

These affinity spaces are organized around shared identities, work, and challenges, and provide another space for members of our North Side community to find common ground and organize to build power. If you are interested in joining one of the Affinity Spaces, fill out the form below.

  • Women of Color

All women and femmes of color are welcome to join this monthly gathering in Rogers Park, centered on healing, leadership development, and mutual support.
  • Youth

Young people ages 16-25 are invited to join this space to get involved in the work of organizing their community! This is a way to get introduced to all our issues and the ways they especially impact youth.
  • Faith Leaders

Faith communities have always been central to community organizing. North Side faith leaders from all faiths are welcome to join this table, which meets 3-4 times year, to discuss the issues most important to their communities and how we can work together to take action.
  • Service Agency Providers

Directors and senior staff of direct service providers are invited to meet and collaborate in this space as we face shared challenges.
